Staying ahead of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health concerns starts with one straightforward habit: keeping up with routine exams and cleanings. For Jacksonville families, these preventive visits are the foundation of preventive dentistry — catching small problems before they grow into costly, painful ones, and giving you a clear picture of where your oral health stands at every visit.
At JAX Dental Studio in Jacksonville’s San Marco neighborhood, Dr. Charles Poblenz, DMD delivers thorough, technology-forward exams and cleanings for patients of all ages. As a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the American Dental Association, Dr. Poblenz completes far more continuing education each year than Florida requires. We use digital X-rays and iTero 5D scanning to examine your teeth and gums with precision, and every visit ends with a personalized plan tailored to your oral health, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
What's Included in Your Exam and Cleaning at JAX Dental Studio
Every visit covers a thorough evaluation and a professional cleaning. Here is what you can expect each time you come in.
Digital X-Rays
Low-radiation digital radiographs reveal decay, bone changes, and issues beneath the surface that a visual exam alone cannot detect.
Oral Cancer Screening
We examine all oral tissues at every visit — an essential screen because early-stage oral cancer is far more treatable than advanced disease.
Gum Evaluation
Pocket depths are measured and tissue is assessed for early signs of periodontal disease, even before symptoms appear.
Plaque and Tartar Removal
Our hygienists clear hardened calculus from above and below the gumline — buildup that brushing and flossing cannot remove on their own.
Teeth Polishing
Prophy paste polishing smooths enamel surfaces, removes light surface stains, and leaves your teeth clean and bright.
Fluoride Treatment
A professional fluoride application strengthens enamel and can reduce sensitivity, especially for patients at higher risk for tooth decay.
What Your Dental Exam Covers at JAX Dental Studio
A comprehensive dental exam is more than a quick look inside your mouth. We take a systematic approach to evaluating every aspect of your oral health, so small issues are identified before they become bigger ones. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of adults aged 30 and older show signs of gum disease — making routine screening essential even when nothing feels wrong.
Digital X-Rays
We take precise digital radiographs to detect decay between teeth, bone loss, cysts, and issues below the gumline that are invisible to the naked eye.
Oral Cancer Screening
We examine your lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and soft tissues for any early signs of oral cancer — a quick but potentially life-saving step included at every visit.
Gum and Bone Evaluation
We measure gum pocket depths and assess tissue health for early signs of periodontal disease, including areas that may not yet cause noticeable symptoms.
Tooth Decay and Restoration Check
Every tooth surface is evaluated for decay, and any existing crowns, fillings, or other restorations are checked to confirm they are still functioning properly.

Professional Dental Cleaning in Jacksonville
A professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar that your toothbrush and floss simply cannot reach on their own. Our dental hygienists use specialized instruments to clean above and below the gumline, polish your enamel to remove surface stains, and apply fluoride treatment when appropriate. Most patients leave with noticeably cleaner teeth and a refreshed feeling that home care alone does not produce.
Some patients with a history of gum disease may benefit from a deeper cleaning — called scaling and root planing — rather than a routine prophylaxis. This more thorough procedure removes bacterial buildup from below the gumline and along the tooth roots. During your exam, we determine which type of cleaning your current oral health calls for and explain our reasoning so you can make an informed decision about your care.

Meet Our TeamInsurance and Financing for Dental Exams at JAX Dental Studio
We accept a wide range of insurance plans to keep quality preventive care within reach for Jacksonville families. Our practice is in network with BlueCross BlueShield, Humana, Cigna, Aetna, and Florida Combined Life. Most insurance plans cover preventive visits — including exams, cleanings, and X-rays — at little or no out-of-pocket cost, so there is rarely a reason to delay a routine checkup.
Patients without traditional insurance can take advantage of our $149 new patient exam, cleaning, and X-ray special, or ask about our in-house membership plan. For any treatment identified during your visit, we also offer financing through CareCredit so cost is never a barrier to care. You can explore all options on our insurance and financing page or ask our team to verify your benefits before your appointment.
How Often Should You Get Dental Exams and Cleanings in Jacksonville

Most patients benefit from exams and cleanings every six months. This twice-a-year schedule gives us regular opportunities to catch problems early and keep your teeth free from damaging buildup. Patients with active gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, or certain systemic health conditions may benefit from more frequent visits — typically every three to four months.
During your appointment, we recommend a schedule based on your current oral health, risk factors, and any existing dental crowns, bridges, or other restorations. The goal is always to stay ahead of problems rather than react after they have already developed.
Signs It May Be Time to Schedule a Checkup in Jacksonville
Beyond your regular schedule, certain situations call for an earlier appointment. If any of the following apply to you, reaching out to our Jacksonville team is a good next step.
- It has been more than six months since your last exam or cleaning
- You notice bleeding when you brush or floss
- A tooth feels sensitive to hot, cold, or sweets
- You have persistent bad breath that does not improve with brushing
- You see or feel changes in your gums, tongue, or soft tissues
- You recently had dental work and want to confirm everything is healing well
If a dental concern becomes urgent, we also offer emergency dentistry services for situations that cannot wait for a routine appointment.
Dental Exam and Cleaning FAQs
Does dental insurance cover exams and cleanings in Jacksonville?
Most dental insurance plans cover preventive visits — including exams, X-rays, and cleanings — at 100% or with minimal cost-sharing, because insurers recognize that preventive care prevents more expensive claims down the road. We are in network with BlueCross BlueShield, Humana, Cigna, Aetna, and Florida Combined Life. Our team is happy to verify your benefits before your appointment.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gumline and is appropriate for patients with healthy gums or mild buildup. A deep cleaning — called scaling and root planing — goes further below the gumline to remove bacteria from tooth roots and is recommended when gum disease is present. We determine which type of cleaning you need based on your exam findings.
How long does a dental exam and cleaning take?
Most routine visits take between 45 minutes and one hour. If it has been a while since your last visit or if we take a full set of X-rays, the appointment may run a bit longer. We do our best to stay on schedule while making sure nothing is rushed.
Is a dental cleaning painful?
For most patients, a routine cleaning is comfortable. You may feel some pressure or mild sensitivity around the gumline, especially if it has been some time since your last visit. If you experience significant discomfort, let us know — we can adjust our approach and discuss whether your gum health may be a contributing factor.
How often should I schedule exams and cleanings?
Most patients benefit from a visit every six months. If you have a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or certain health conditions that affect oral health, we may recommend more frequent visits — typically every three to four months. We will give you a personalized recommendation at your first visit.
Can I eat after my dental cleaning?
Yes — there is no recovery period after a routine cleaning, so you can eat normally afterward. If you receive a fluoride treatment, we recommend waiting about 30 minutes before eating or drinking to let the fluoride fully absorb. Our team will let you know of any specific instructions at the end of your appointment.
