Most patients need an exam and cleaning every six months
Patients with gum disease, frequent cavities, or certain health conditions may benefit from visits every three to four months. We recommend a schedule based on your oral health and risk factors. Schedule sooner if:
- It has been more than six months since your last visit
- Your gums bleed when you brush or floss
- A tooth is sensitive to hot, cold, or sweets
- Bad breath does not improve with brushing
- You notice changes in your gums, tongue, or soft tissues

Meet Dr. Charles Poblenz, DMD
Dr. Poblenz was born and raised in Jensen Beach, Florida, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of North Florida, where he volunteered as a dental assistant at the I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless. He earned his DMD from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 2015 and returned to Jacksonville to begin his career. He and our team complete continuing education well beyond Florida requirements each year.
Through the Donated Dental Services program, he also provides complimentary care for vulnerable individuals in the Jacksonville community.

Does dental insurance cover exams and cleanings in Jacksonville?

What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A routine cleaning removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gumline and is right for patients with healthy gums or mild buildup. A deep cleaning, called scaling and root planing, goes further below the gumline to clean the tooth roots and is recommended when gum disease is present.
How long does a dental exam and cleaning take?
Most routine visits take between 45 minutes and one hour. If it has been a while since your last visit or we take a full set of X-rays, the appointment may run a bit longer.
Is a dental cleaning painful?
For most patients, a routine cleaning is comfortable. You may feel some pressure or mild sensitivity around the gumline, especially if it has been a while. If you feel significant discomfort, let us know and we can adjust our approach.
How often should I schedule exams and cleanings?
Most patients benefit from a visit every six months. If you have a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or certain health conditions, we may recommend visits every three to four months.
Can I eat after my dental cleaning?
Yes. There is no recovery period after a routine cleaning. If you receive a fluoride treatment, wait about 30 minutes before eating or drinking so the fluoride can absorb.
Do I need X-rays at every visit?
No. We take X-rays when they are due based on your age, history, and risk factors. Most adults need bitewing X-rays every 12 to 24 months.
What happens if I skip a cleaning?
Tartar keeps building up where brushing cannot reach, which feeds cavities and gum disease. You also miss the exam and screenings that catch problems early.
