Early Detection Is the Best Defense Against Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is one of the most preventable threats to your overall health because it is highly treatable when found early. Dental professionals detect the majority of oral cancer cases in their earliest and most treatable stages, which is exactly why we include a thorough screening in every comprehensive exam at JAX Dental Studio.

Dr. Charles Poblenz, DMD checks for signs of abnormal tissue growth and suspicious changes during your routine visit. The process is fast, painless, and requires no preparation on your part. It takes only a few minutes and could be one of the most important things that happens at your dental checkup.

What Happens at Your Oral Cancer Screening

Every oral cancer screening at JAX Dental Studio follows a two-part process designed to examine all soft tissues in and around your mouth. It is performed as part of your regular checkup, so there is nothing extra to schedule and nothing to prepare for.

Part 1: Visual Examination

Dr. Poblenz carefully examines your lips, gums, tongue, inner cheeks, the roof and floor of your mouth, and the back of your throat. He looks for any unusual changes in color, texture, or shape, including white patches, red patches, persistent sores, or anything that appears asymmetrical or out of the ordinary.

Part 2: Tactile Examination

Dr. Poblenz uses his hands to gently feel along the lymph nodes of your jaw and neck, checking for swelling, unusual masses, or tenderness. The underside of the tongue and the floor of the mouth are also examined with gauze to expose areas not easily visible. This physical palpation step is critical for detecting changes that a visual exam alone cannot reveal.

Advanced Screening Technology

Our Jacksonville practice uses soft tissue laser technology to support thorough oral examinations. This allows us to assess tissues at a level not possible with visual inspection alone, enhancing our ability to identify abnormalities in their earliest and most treatable stages.

Who Benefits Most from Regular Screenings

We screen every patient at every exam, regardless of risk level. Oral cancer can develop in anyone, including people who have never smoked. That said, certain factors increase your risk and make consistent screenings especially important:

  • Tobacco use — cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and smokeless tobacco all carry elevated oral cancer risk
  • Heavy alcohol consumption — particularly when combined with tobacco use, the risk increases significantly
  • HPV (human papillomavirus) — HPV-related oral cancers are increasing, including among patients without traditional risk factors
  • Prolonged sun exposure — UV radiation increases the risk of lip cancer specifically
  • Age 40 and older — risk increases with age, though younger adults are not exempt

If you have one or more of these risk factors, let Dr. Poblenz know at your appointment. We can build a more frequent monitoring schedule into your preventive care routine.

Insurance Coverage for Your Oral Cancer Screening

Preventive screenings, including oral cancer exams, are typically covered under your annual dental benefits. At JAX Dental Studio, we are in-network with BlueCross BlueShield, Humana, Cigna, Florida Combined Life, and Aetna. For patients without insurance coverage, we offer financing through CareCredit and an in-house membership plan that makes preventive care affordable regardless of your situation. Our team is happy to verify your benefits before your appointment.

Warning Signs to Watch for Between Visits

Most changes in your mouth are harmless, but some warrant a prompt professional evaluation. Contact our Jacksonville office if any of the following persist for more than two weeks:

  • White or red patches inside your mouth, on the tongue, or along the gums that do not heal on their own
  • Non-healing mouth sores or ulcers lasting longer than two weeks, even if they are painless
  • Unusual swelling or lumps in the mouth, jaw, or neck that are new or growing
  • Difficulty swallowing or a persistent sore throat not explained by illness or seasonal allergies
  • Numbness or unexplained pain anywhere in the mouth, lips, or face
  • Voice changes or hoarseness that lasts more than a few days without an obvious cause
  • Loose teeth without an apparent reason, such as injury or known decay

You do not need to wait for your next scheduled visit if you notice something concerning. Call us at (904) 396-4091 and we will get you seen promptly.

If Something Is Found During Your Screening

Finding a suspicious area during a screening does not mean you have cancer. The majority of abnormal findings turn out to be benign. What it does mean is that we take the appropriate next step so nothing is left to chance.

Depending on what Dr. Poblenz observes, we may recommend monitoring the area at a follow-up visit, ordering a tissue biopsy for further examination, or referring you to a trusted oral pathology specialist in the Jacksonville area. Whatever the next step, we walk through it with you clearly before you leave the office. Early findings lead to the best outcomes, and that is why we do not wait.

Oral Cancer Screening FAQs

At JAX Dental Studio, we perform an oral cancer screening at every comprehensive exam. For most patients, that means twice a year. If you have elevated risk factors, such as tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, or a history of HPV, Dr. Poblenz may recommend more frequent monitoring as part of your preventive care plan.
Not at all. The screening is completely painless and non-invasive. It involves a visual examination of the soft tissues in and around your mouth followed by a gentle physical palpation of the jaw and neck. Most patients do not even realize it is happening. No instruments, no discomfort, and nothing to prepare for.
Yes. While tobacco and heavy alcohol use are among the most significant risk factors, oral cancer can develop in people with no traditional risk factors. HPV-related oral cancers have been rising, particularly among younger adults. This is one of the main reasons we screen every patient at every visit, regardless of history.
Most abnormal findings turn out to be benign, but we take every concern seriously. Depending on what is observed, Dr. Poblenz may recommend a follow-up monitoring visit, a tissue biopsy for further examination, or a referral to a trusted oral pathology specialist in the Jacksonville area. He will explain the next steps clearly before you leave the office, so you are never left wondering.
